Meet the Teacher linky!

I'm linking up with Stephanie from Falling into First today for one of my favorite types of linky parties!  I LOVE getting to know more about my favorite teacher bloggers -- beyond the blog and the classroom!  This is such a fun way to meet some fun, new teachers!

A little about me...I have been married to my high school sweetheart, John, for a little over 12 years.  We have two children -- our son, Trey, is going into second grade and our daughter, Rowan, will be starting Kindergarten in a few weeks!  We live in Southwest Michigan, just a few miles from Lake Michigan.  I am entering my 12th year of teaching -- my 11th in Kindergarten!

THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS...
Jesus.  My family and friends.  Teaching.  Waking up in time to see the sun rise.  Ice cream.  The beach.  Travel.  Polka dots.  EOS lip balm.  Scented markers. Green, navy blue, and gray.  Reality TV.  Jack Johnson's music.  Laughing.

IF YOU WEREN'T A TEACHER, WHAT WOULD YOU WANT TO BE?
Oh my.  I really don't know!  Teaching is the PERFECT job for me!  I would probably be a social worker or something similar.  A job where I could build relationships!

THREE LITTLE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE YOU.
Optimistic, caring, grateful.

FINISH THE SENTENCE, "________,  SAID NO TEACHER EVER!!"
Sure!  I'd LOVE to tie your shoes for the 20th time today!

Q: IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY AND YOU CAN INVITE ANYONE {DEAD OR ALIVE} TO THE PARTY. WHO ARE YOU INVITING?
I love music!!  I love singing along and dancing with my friends!  I'd invite Jack Johnson (or maybe Phillip Phillips) to come play for my party!

Q: IF SOMEONE WROTE A BOOK ABOUT YOUR LIFE, WHAT WOULD BE THE TITLE?
"Do Likewise" (just a thought that I live by...)

Q:YOU GET TO PICK ONE SUPERPOWER. WHAT IS IT?
I want the superpower where my fridge and pantry never go empty, but I NEVER have to go to the grocery store!

Q: WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE OR SAYING?
I love words and quotes, so this is hard to choose.  A couple of my favorites are:

"A smile is the prettiest thing you can wear."
and
"Let all that you do be done in love." -1 Corinthians 16:14

Q: IF YOU HAD TO SING ONE SONG ON AMERICAN IDOL, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I don't know!  Maybe something by Colbie Caillat or Natasha Bedingfield.

Q: ARE YOU A MORNING PERSON OR A NIGHT OWL?
Morning, morning, morning!  I set my alarm to wake up before the rest of my family because the quiet of the early morning is my very favorite part of the day!  I'm completely worthless after 9 PM.  Ha!

Q: WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE RESOURCE THAT YOU'VE CREATED IN YOUR TPT SHOP?
I love my Brain Boost sets.  I created them last summer and they became a favorite part of my week with my students last year!

Q: SHARE SOMETHING WE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU!
I LOVE the dentist -- especially the part where they pick the plaque off my teeth!  That part of my appointment never lasts long enough and I wish I could go once a week!  I am obsessed with flossing and keep dental floss everywhere.

This was so fun!  Pop on over to Stephanie's blog to meet some other teachers!!

Thirteen in '13 Linky

WOW!  It's been a while since I've posted anything!!  I do have a few posts coming up this week (hopefully!), but I have enjoyed some time away from the blog to spend time with family, and to soak in the Christmas season.  My break so far has been so wonderful.  I didn't know how badly I needed time to slow down and breathe a bit.

I'm late to the linky party, but I figure I'm still fine seeing as it's still 2013... this is a fun one and I didn't want to miss out!

My favorite article of clothing this time of year has got to be my BOGS boots.
They are so, so warm and are amazing for trudging through slushy parking lots, playing in the snow with my kids, and roaming the playground while on recess duty.  Most times I wear them without socks.  I don't know how they keep my feet warm in these frigid Michigan temps, but they do!  Love them.

I don't watch a lot of movies, unless they are old favorites on TV or something, but my hubby and I did take our kids to see Frozen last Monday and it was ADORABLE!!  The storyline was sweet and the characters were great, but my favorite part was the MUSIC.
So, so good.

I am a reality TV junkie.  I have so many that I watch all the time.  But, my favorite???
I love Project Runway.

And how sweet is Tim Gunn???  He makes me smile.

We don't really eat out much.

I feel like I am beginning to sound like a real drag!  Ha!  I don't watch movies...I don't eat out....all I do all day long is sit around watching reality TV marathons.  Oh my.

I think it's our stage in life with young children, that we would rather eat home than eat out.

I am on a Mexican food kick lately, so if I had to pick a place to get take-out, I might choose
Guacamole and pico de gallo make me one happy girl.

Hmmm...this year I tried blogging!  Well, I've had a family blog for several years now, but this year I dove into this fun, little teacher-blogging world.  It has been the most fun.  I have loved all of the connections I've made and everything that I'm learning.  If I'm being honest, it's all taken off a bit slower than I'd hoped, but I've learned time and time again in my life that there is beauty in everything, so I am looking forward to another year of blogging, growing, and learning here in my little corner of the internet.

I am having a hard time thinking back over the whole year for this one, so I'll focus on Christmas.  I only got a few gifts for Christmas this year, but my fave was the Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette that I got from my bestie!
Love!!!  I am having so much fun playing around with it.
She knows me so well! :)

This isn't school-related, but I was able to take the inspiration from this pin
and re-create that sign for my master bedroom.
We just got new bedding and I'm on the hunt for pillow shams that I like, so our bed looks a little bare right now, but I love the simplicity of the sign and it fits our bedroom perfectly.

Some of my favorite things from last school year were the Girls Only and Boys Only lunches that I did.  They were so fun, and I can't wait to plan them again this spring for my current class.  CLICK HERE to head to the post about the Girls Only lunch.

Last year was our district's first year with all day-every day Kindergarten.  I was really proud at the end of the school year with how far my students had come and, in particular, what great readers they had become!  The results were SO different than my half-day students had ever performed.  My students worked hard, and they went on to first grade so prepared.  I was one super proud teacher as I wrapped up last school year.

One of my favorite memories from 2013 was our trip to Disney World in June.  This picture was taken on our first day there.
Disney is just pure magic.

I have lots and lots of wonderful memories from this year, but this one stands out to me right now.  My hubby and I surprised our son, Trey, with a train trip to Chicago for his 6th birthday back in April.  We had the best time.
Only a couple days after we got back, our entire lives changed so drastically, so this memory of before that all happened is very treasured!

Of course I have lots of small goals, and a few big ones too, for 2014...personally and professionally.  My biggest goal for every year is to deepen my relationship with Christ.  I've never been great about reading the Bible consistently, but I just started reading the chronological Bible and I would love to finish it by the end of 2014.  More than anything, I want to live, serve, and LOVE like Jesus, and I know that spending time with Him is the best way to do that.

My one word for 2014 is GRATITUDE.
2013 has held lots of joy and lots of pain for my family.  In April, my {amazing} mother-in-law was diagnosed with cancer and passed away 20 days later.  In July, my dad was in a very serious car accident.  He broke 10 bones and his passenger was killed.  He's doing well, but it's been such a long road of recovery for him.  My son has been struggling with some health issues this fall connected to a hereditary blood disorder that he has and there are still some unanswered questions with him.  Dear friends have been affected with scary, sad situations.  It's been a roller coaster year.
Over the past couple months, in the moments when everything has seemed like too much, I have felt small nudges in my soul reminding me to be grateful.  I've never had to think hard to come up with countless reasons to be grateful.  I can list blessing upon blessing upon blessing in my life.  I want to live a life of gratitude in 2014.

Meet the Teacher Monday

I'm not quite feeling the back-to-school crunch yet, but I am going to join the fun and link up with Blog Hoppin's Teacher Week!

Today's topic is great because I have learned so many fun things about the bloggers I love to follow.

1. I am married to my high school sweetheart (he played football and I was a cheerleader....a perfect match!) and we have two awesome kids.  Trey is 6 and entering 1st grade.  Rowan is 4 and will be in pre-school this year.  They are very different -- Trey is reserved and a rule-follower while Rowan is strong-willed and unpredictable -- but they are both equally terrified of dogs!  Silly kids.  John and I feel very blessed!

Ummm....must be time for a family photo because I can't find a nice one of all four of us together!

2. I love breakfast and MUST eat a good breakfast before beginning my day.  My favorite thing to eat for breakfast during the school year is oatmeal.  Filling and delicious!

3. I love the beach and hot summer weather!  Our summer in Michigan this year has been a little on the cool side - like mid-70's.  Really nice for being outside, but not exactly beach weather.  I live about 15 minutes from beautiful Lake Michigan, and I'm hoping that we can fit in a couple beach days yet before we head back to school!

4. I'm a reality TV junkie.  I love Survivor, The Amazing Race, Project Runway, The Voice...the list goes on and on!!

5. I love the movie Girls Just want to Have Fun!  I've loved it since I was young, and still watch my old VHS of it from time to time.

6. My favorite children's book author is Kevin Henkes.  My favorite book of his is probably Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse, but I love all of his books!

7.  I don't spend much time reading aside from blogs, teaching-related books, and the occasional People magazine.  BUT...I read 3 fun novels over the summer and I enjoyed them so much.  Maybe someday when I have more time, reading will become one of my favorite hobbies.

8. Gerber daisies are my favorite flower.  They are so bright and cheerful in their bold, fun colors!

9. I don't care for juice or milk, and I don't drink much pop....so water is almost always my beverage of choice!  I LOVE a glass of ice-cold water and bring water with me almost everywhere I go!

10.  I am a fast walker and a loud talker.  I love to sing and my favorite color is green.  I'm suuuuper afraid of mice and bats.  I'm easily excitable, but I also like to think that I'm pretty laid back.  And I'm thankful to have 3 more weeks of summer to enjoy!!

Five for Friday {June 28}

We just returned home from our big Disney vacay today after driving through the night last night.  I am ready for an early bedtime tonight, but had to join in on Kacey's Five for Friday linky party since I won't have another chance until August!

1.
We had the best time at Disney.  It had been over 10 years since my hubby and I had been there and, of course, our first time with our kids.  PRICELESS is the best word I can think of!  And MAGICAL!  And I know that this photo doesn't show Disney at all, but it was one of the only photos from our trip that I am actually in!  It was taken on our last evening at the Magic Kingdom.  We were waiting in Fantasyland for the chance to meet Belle!

I wrote detailed posts about each day on my family blog.  Hop over to read more about our trip there!

It was a fabulous trip, but it's always good to be home!

2.
Speaking of road trips, you MUST remember this if you plan to take a road trip with children at some point.  We had an 18-hour drive each way.  On the way down, we drove the whole thing during the day.  You know how kids are in the car.....(actually, I'm the same way)....they ask for snacks.  A lot.
These were such life-savers!!

I got the idea from Pinterest (of course...).  Here is the original source.

I picked up these bead storage boxes from Hobby Lobby for $1.99 a piece.  And one I got for 40% off.  Cheap!!  I used my Silhouette to cut vinyl and fancy them up.  (Nicole Alderson, did you spot Rowdy Spunky???  LOVE that font!)  Then, I just filled each little compartment with snacks.  A good variety so that they had lots to choose from.  When it was time for a snack, I pulled out their boxes and they chose two sections.  They LOVED it!!  It was my favorite tip of the trip, and I highly recommend it if you'll be travelling with hungry kids!!

3.
I have to spread a little blog love to one of my favorite teacher-bloggers, Kristen from A Teeny Tiny Teacher.  Do you follow her???  She has the most hilarious recaps of The Bachelorette each week, and has me laughing out loud with every one!  Pop over if you haven't been there before!!
(P.S. -- she doesn't know I exist, but her posts are always a highlight of my week, so she's one of my FIVE this week!  I always love a good blog recommendation!!)

4.
I've been seriously playing for the past two weeks, so next week it is back to work!  Lots on the to-do list.  Of course there is summer fun to be had next week, but the to-do list is long too!
This awesome organizer is from Nicole at Rowdy in Room 300.  Click here to grab it for yourself!

5.
By now I KNOW you know that Google Reader will be no more after this weekend!  I was sooooo sad for so long, but finally embraced it and am really liking Bloglovin'!  Click on the button on my sidebar to follow me on Bloglovin' or you can import your current blog favorites from your Google Reader account.  It's so simple and quick!

Happy weekend, friends!!

Some of my greatest LOVES???

My family, of course!
John and I were high school sweethearts and have been married for almost 11 years.
Trey is almost 6 and Rowan is almost 4!

I LOVE writing/blogging!  I kept a journal for most of my life, pretty much until I began blogging.  I have had a family blog for several years, and finally began my teaching blog in December!  The teaching blog that I LOVE the most is Rowdy in Room 300!  I don't even remember how I stumbled across Nicole's blog, but I was hooked from the first post I read and I knew that Nicole and I had a lot in common.  Besides being a super fun teacher with lots of awesome ideas, she is an incredibly gracious and selfless person!  She gave me SO MUCH help and encouragement as I started my blog!  Someday I will meet this girl and give her a hug in person!  But for now.....virtual bloggy hugs to you, Nicole!

I love breakfast!  I cannot start my day without a decent breakfast!  My current favorites are
with berries

OR

 with raisins.

I LOVE quiet mornings, meeting new people, laying in the sun, countdowns to special days, singing in the car, traveling, family traditions, playing games, being with my friends, and so much more!  OH, and I love teaching Kindergarten!

Happy Valentine's week, friends!  Do something you LOVE today!
